Welcome to Off The Dance Floor.

We are a community of artists, healers, educators and activists that aspire to bring the freedom that we experience on the dance floor in service to the greater collective off the dance floor.

Our inaugural course Moving Toward Liberation is an attempt to root our journey together in relationship to the trying times that we are living in - from the ongoing genocide in Gaza, to the many humanitarian crises happening around the world, the ongoing deterioration of the earth, to the polarization and injustices within our own communities.

We believe that by facing these issues together & by connecting our healing and dance practices to the wellbeing of all people and the earth, our communities can be a force of positive change.

About The Course

Through ritual, education and embodied practice & in collaboration with Palestinian, Jewish, Black, Arab and Indigenous somatic teachers and activists from around the world, we will create a space that will allow for us to expand our ideas of transformation and freedom beyond the limits of the individual and into the greater power of the collective.

We will explore:

  • How to grieve the current crises happening around the world & in our own communities

  • The various systems of oppression that perpetuate these crises, where they live within our own bodies and what somatic tools can support us in healing their effects

  • The role of art and the artist within liberation movements

  • Strategies for taking collective action to alleviate the suffering of others & in service to creating a more just and beautiful world for all bodies

Each session will have:

  • Opening grounding meditation, music with movement, silence and stillness

  • Theories of change and lectures

  • Embodied practices & exercises

  • Break-out groups for digesting and heart-sharing

Course Curriculum

  • In this session, we will start in the body with music and a guided invocation. We will establish group agreements in order to create trust and safety, and meet with all the facilitators.

Warmup + Invocation with Reem “dreeemy” Abdou and Atasiea Ferguson.

  • Facilitators: Dana Dajani & Rawan Roshni

This ritual will make space for grief to be felt, seen, heard and carried, for and by the collective. We will unearth the sorrow and anger that emerge from the deep desire for better, holding together the weight of that which isn’t meant to be processed alone.

We will map the pain in our bodies and on the body of the earth, move with it and allow it to move us. This ritual is a journey of release and transformation, finding the antidote and building emotional solidarity.

    Warmup with Omar Aena

  • Facilitator: Itaf Awad

This workshop will guide us through the Way of Council - a practice enables deep transformative connection, through listening and speaking from the heart.

We will lead with our hearts toward authentic communication, trust, relationship, healing and community.

    Warmup with Valerie Chafograck

  • Facilitator: Saed Mansour

In this session, we will practice embodying social and political issues of our choosing by moving through one side of the issue, the other, and then both at the same time.

    Warmup with Omar Aena

  • Facilitators: Melina Laboucan-Massimo & Dana Dajani

In this session, we will draw parallels of the struggle for freedom in Palestine to the Indigenous people in Turtle Island/North America.

    Warmup: Nick Demeris

  • Facilitators: Valerie Chafograck and Dominique Cowling

Movement practice can be inspiring, healing and revolutionary when it comes to exploring relating to others. Relationships bring us into the Heart- the point is to be aware, to cultivate pathways that allow us to choose connection with intentionality. What would it be like to practice a movement language that involves no spoken words?

What becomes possible when we invite breath and presence to the movements of our hearts?

This workshop will be an opportunity to be embodied throughout various landscapes of relationships. We will build resilience and capacity for genuine exploration with anyone we encounter on the virtual dance floor and in the everyday dance.

    Warmup with Omar Aena

  • Facilitator: Wendy Elisheva Somerson

In this workshop, we will explore how being present in our bodies is an inherently political act that helps us stay connected to each other. The dominant culture of oppression relies on the objectification of others and disconnection from the land and our living environments. We will learn a foundational practice of centering that help us recognize our interdependence rather than our separation from each other, and all of life.

We will also look specifically at how Jewish historical trauma and grief are weaponized by the Israeli government and its supporters as a tool of separation to provide moral cover for the oppression of Palestinians. We will explore how healing from trauma can help all of us reach for connection beyond the boundaries of our identities to show up in solidarity with each other with the goal of Palestinian and collective liberation.

    Opening warmup: Reem “dreeemy” Abdou

  • This final session will include sharing our learnings from the course, celebrating our transformations and making commitments to each other for the journey ahead.

** Please note: the placement of each session and its content is subject to change.

“Self-care can be sacred, but we won’t survive by it. Collective care is our calling.”

- Cole Arthur Riley

By doing this work together, we believe our communities could become more robust & united in an increasingly divisive world.  Our healing & dance spaces would become safer and more inclusive for all bodies. Our self-care would expand into collective-care. Our culture of wellbeing can become more rooted in the interdependence of our shared humanity.

This course is meant for you if:

  • you practice conscious dance or any type of healing modality within community

  • you feel called to extend this healing beyond yourself & in service to the collective

  • you are disillusioned with the status quo of new age wellness and spirituality

  • you want to connect with a kindred community ready to take action for collective liberation

  • you are ready to investigate where systems of oppression live within yourself and your community & reclaim your essential humanity

This course is NOT meant for you if:

  • you are unwilling to sit with discomfort & refuse to have your ideas about identity & privilege challenged in a healthy way

  • you believe that spirituality is devoid of a duty to act against injustice

  • you prefer to speak and center yourself over listening to others

  • you consciously hold racist, prejudiced beliefs towards anyone

Want to connect? If so, we would love to hear from you.
